If I was supreme ruler of the world...

That's a tough question...

Over the weekend, I thought about it, and I really wanna just make it easier for immigrants to cross so they won't die trying to cross. I would also like to make it easier for the immigrants to get visas and greencards, but also have they border patrol and the enforcements to be somewhat strong to keep them in line.

What can High Tech High Chula Vista do to benefit the border region?

Well, as students, adults don't really see us as an authority or people who can be able to make change. And Kay wants us to write a blog about how HTHCV can benefit the border. So, honestly, on my way home, I couldn't think of anything.

So how could I change something....anything?

Personally, I'm very good at Service Learning and Community Service all just because I like to help people. I think I could change something just by something small like reading to children (like we did at the Otay Ranch Town center on Saturday) or also what we're doing for ASB, the toy drive. I think that toys or reading to someone makes people happy. And when people are happy, I believe that itself changes the world.

As a school, I think we should start with something small. I mean, we couldn't help people get visas or green cards. But we could raise money to help the needy. Or also like what we did in Math, have a canned food drive to go to the orphanage in TJ. Our school definitely has a lot of potential to do a lot to help others. And we are all really aware of that. I think we are all really fortunate for what we have and doing something small for someone else could change the world.

Stereotypes

Stereotype: "A conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, or image."

Stereotypes can be about religion, gender, size, ethnicity, age, race, sexual orientation, nationality, profession, physical appearance, social class, disability, and so much more.

I think that common stereotypes are about race and religion. (ex. All Asians are smart)

Stereotypes could come from centuries ago and taught by parents. Like a child could have those opinions only because their parents told them that and that's the only perspective that they've seen (ex. heiresses). It can also come from individual opinions too.

Why does the world have borders?

To figure out why the world has borders, we should have to know what borders are for.

After the 9/11 attack, the borders and the border patrol were strengthened to prevent any other attack like that so it wouldn't happen again. Borders can be used for safety and protection, but they can also be used for separation and isolation to other countries which might cause racism to other people from other races and places.

But why do we have to have borders? We were taught that all people were the same and that we should all be treated equally. So why do we really have to be seperated and why are they so strict to not let anyone else in? When we think of borders one of the first things we think of is protection, because again we don't want another terrorist attack to happen again.

But from a perspective from another country, I think in the Philippines, they don't have so much to worry about borders so much because it is an island, and to get there you can't just hop a fence. But you still need a visa and a passport just like if someone in Mexico was trying to come to the US.

To some, a border is just an invisible line where very different people can live. To others, it can be somthing that they believe shouldn't be messed with.

Benifits

So before, we had to post a blog about harms of US and Mexico and now it's about how US benefits Mexico and how Mexico benefits the US.

The reason why I think that the US and Mexico benefit each other is because of traveling and vacation. There are some places in Mexico where people like to go for their vacation time with families. I've even heard my parents talk about going to places like Cabo with the Disney Cruise. Even when you go to amusment parks like Disneyland or Sea World there are always tourists. And it makes other people want to visit too. And maybe move here or in Mexico or in any other country and increases population.

Another reason why I think that US benifits Mexixo is that because we're so close to each other we can help them and donate money and things in case natural disasters happen.

How Mexico and the US harm each other

Our humanities homework for today? Find out how Mexico and the US harm each other.

In a recent study, it showed that the contaminated air in Mexico City does more damage to children than cigarette smoke. It can also cause chronic lung diseases when they're adults. With the pollution in the air, and us living so close, it definitely affects us here in the United States. With wind travelling, that polluted air can also get us sick or have lung disease too.

The US can also affect Mexico too. Although I can't think of many right now, but some things that I've heard that affects Mexicans are crossing the border. They need green cards, visas, birth certificates, or passports. I think that this affects Mexico and Mexicans by making them fustrated and kind of forcing them to cross over illegally. Maybe if the US was lighter on them then it would be easier and faster to cross over.

A Change in Policy

http://www.usconstitution.net/consttop_lang.html
In humanities we're having a debate on a policy in Mexico that should be changed or have a new policy.

My partner, Bryanna and myself are for the topic of having English to be the official language of the US. For example, when Mexicans come to the US and they don't know English, instead of having their classes in Spanish, they should have it in English so they can learn the language better.

The website that I have linked has a lot of different perspectives without pressuring you to be for one topic. It also links you to other sites with other information.

Immigration

Our new project is about the US/Mexico border and our topic question for today is "Why do people immigrate?". But since I'm not Mexican or ever crossed the border, I can't really tell you why Mexicans cross the border. However, both of my parents came to the US from the Philippines.

My parents took a 20-hour flight to come here from their hometown, the capital of the Philippines, Manila. When I asked my mom why she immigrated she said, "My parents wanted us to have the opportunity to have a good future so they sent us over them first, then the ones under eighteen, then the older ones." Here in the US there's a lot of career options rather than in the Philippines where it's poor.

I think in a way that the people who immigrated from Mexico also have some of the same reasons that my mom had. Other reasons someone might immigrate from their homeland is because they might want to get away because they really don't like it. Like maybe their environment is bad or there's a lot of wars and fights. Or maybe they just think for example that the US is better just because it's bigger or healthier. Those kinds of reasons are like the saying "The grass is greener on the other side", and maybe some people just think that even though it might not be.

US/Mexico Border

The US and Mexico are very different. On one side there's fertile green grass, on the other, dirt and many houses. Although I've never been to across the border or like that close to it, I've heard many things from the people that have. In Mexico, there are many houses, but dirty. No middle class, just the rich and the poor with restaurants on every street corner. On the other side of the border, San Diego, California. Still with houses, condos, and apartments. Driving around Chula Vista, you see the construction of more houses, freeways, malls, and towncenters. In the neighboorhoods, parks children playing in the streets. Like those suburbs you see in the movies. There is a difference. But why?
Brainstorming in class, just for about three minutes, talking about Mexico and why it's the way it is, you hear words like "poor, brown, dirty", "rich or poor, nothing inbetween", "needy", "smelles bad". I think that Mexico is like that because of so many people living there. With the overpopulation, caused them to have to build more houses and to do that, they had to clear the way and create space. Which caused the dirt and pollution no one bothered to clean up which might have caused the difference in the air and scent you notice once you cross the border.
Living here all my life, I've always been close to the border, but never crossed it. I know what's on this side of the border, here or in Washington. It's very green here, lots of grass and trees. With people still planting more around the house, or around the neighboorhood, there's always a lot of plants and flowers around, making it so beautiful. Here we always have good weather. Sunny during summer, sometimes too hot. Somtimes rainy winters that can get too cold.
But why is it so different? I'm guessing that it's the overpopulation and the constant building without cleaning. I've never been there, so I still don't know. But until then, I can only assume from what I've heard.
